New Cancer Council research shows only about every fourth Australian is known that colorectal cancer of one of the two largest cancer killer of the country.

Chair of Cancer Council Australia's bowel cancer screening Committee, Anita Tang, said the lack of awareness in a Galaxy poll commissioned by Cancer Council reports reflected alarmingly slow progress in the population screening for colorectal cancer.

"If the national bowel cancer screening programme are fully funded and supported, we public awareness of the effects of colorectal cancer much higher would expect," said Ms Tang.

"14 Years after the benefits of screening confirmed were, all we have is a partial program that no longer focuses on new participants and faces an uncertain future."

MS Tang said it was not surprising that the majority of people thought that breast cancer was cancer cause of death of the country. (It is fourth after lung, colon and prostate.)

"Breast cancer advocates have done to increase breast cancer awareness, so it is no wonder that most people go from an excellent job, that breast cancer of Australia is the leading cause of cancer-related death," she said.

The error was even more pronounced when it came to screening. Twice as many Australians thought was recommended screening for breast cancer, compared with those who thought the same thing about colorectal cancer - yet the benefits of the screening were similar for both stored in terms of potential life.

"It five years for the BreastScreen Australia took program to be carried out between 1990 and 1995, nor the national bowel cancer screening program as approaches is adrift its fifth anniversary," said Tang.

"The Australian Government a plan for the implementation of the programme in the budget is 2011 / 12 not known people affected are entitled in the coming years of colorectal cancer to questions why they were denied the benefits of the screening population."

MS Tang said that if people were aware of the benefits the bowel cancer screening, support for national bowel cancer screening programme expansion was overwhelming, with 84 percent say it should be a priority in the federal budget 2011 / 12.
