Article Opinions: 2 postsAfter 100 days in hospital and undergoing a complicated 6-organ transplant, 9-year-old Alannah Shevenell, from Maine, leaves Boston Children's Hospital today and goes home. Alannah has been treated for a rare form of cancer; an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor continued to grow after all possible treatments failed, and was compromising her internal organs.
A team of surgeons, led by Dr. Heung Bae Kim, the hospital's Pediatric Transplant Center director, performed the transplant procedure of Alannah's liver, spleen, pancreas, stomach, small intestine and esophagus. The little girl's grandmother said her little girl received "a new set of parts".
Dr. Kim said his patient needed a "multivisceral transplant" and the removal of the tumor. During the 14-hour procedure, the surgical team removed the donor organs, which all came from one human being. The organs were kept as one unit (together) and then transplanted into the young patient. All this happened a few months ago.

Multivisceral transplants are much less common than one-organ ones. Any type of single-organ transplant has several risks and drawbacks, the main ones being:waiting for a new organ to become available can take timetransplant surgeries carry risks of complicationsthe body may reject the new organA six-organ transplant generally carries a much longer waiting time, a greater risk of surgery complications, and other drawbacks.
However, as Boston Children's Hospital emphasized today, six-organ multivisceral transplants are can be done successfully.

This is an amazing accomplishment and history making event.
There are many heros in this story and brave people coming together after the loss of one life yet to give a new life to another.
This is a remarkable break through in science and medicine.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful story and i hope that the little girl has a wonderful fulfilled life and to the donor who contributed unknowningly there are no words to describe what has been accomplished here.

I'm curious about the ethics motivating multi-organ transplants. Putting aside, for a moment, the case of direct donation (as I think was the case with the above story), if an individual requires a heart, liver, and lung transplant, should each organ be treated independently, placing the patient on three separate waiting lists? Arguably, in this case, six lives may have been spared by parting out each organ to separate recipients.
