Shannon Fortin, University of Arizona of graduate of students from a study of brain cancer in TGen, was as an end 2011 / 12 achievement rewards for College scientists (ARCS) selected scholar.
This $7,000-scholarship enables Fortin to pursue two simultaneous post graduate degrees at the University of Arizona. Cancer Biology Graduate program Tucson she works towards a medical degree at the UA College of medicine-Phoenix and a PhD in the UA.
At the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) studied Fortin glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), the highest grade and brain adult at most malignant form of primary tumors. In particular tried them, discover why this form of cancer so invasive and is resistant to chemotherapy.
"To answer these questions, the genetic signature of brain tumours and consistent molecular signaling responsible for tumor invasion I study." By identifying and understanding the function of genes that cause, malignant tumor cells that spread, we hope to find molecular targets, "said the potential to deal with Therapeutics, Fortin, Tran working in TGen in the laboratory by Associate Professor Dr. Nhan", is a last ARCS scholarship holder at the UA.
"Shannon is a bright and motivated student." "She is passionate about her research and the translational science, which in the long term will benefit patients", said Dr. Tran.
